Netflix's Castlevania is getting a third season, according to star Richard Armitage. Castlevania is a long-running video game franchise that sees various generations of the Belmont clan storming the castle of Dracula and fighting their way through nasty creatures and traps to vanquish the main man himself. The series has appeared on just about every major console over the years, from the SNES all the way up to the PlayStation 3.

The first season of Netflix's animated Castlevania  series surprised everyone with how good it was, featuring a sharp script, lush animation and great voice acting. It's also the only video game adaptation to hold a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes . The only downside was that it was a short, four-part series, and felt like a feature-length story that was chopped into separate pieces. It didn't take long for Netflix to commission a longer, eight-part series that would pick up right where the first season left off.

The show is a loose adaptation of NES game Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and the second season is said to wrap up the current plotline. That said, it seems Netflix knows when they have something special, with star Richard Armitage revealing in an interview with Digital Spy he's already set to record the next series, stating "We're about to record a third. The second season hasn't been aired yet, but we're about to do a third."

Armitage also says he'd be up for a live-action take on Castlevania, should it ever happen.

I love my character in Castlevania... He's this anti-heroic, drunk, slightly foul-mouthed, irritable git! I feel like it would make the most brilliant live-action piece. It's slightly anarchic and humorous – we don't often see vampire heroics in that vein. One day, maybe.

A live-action movie based on Castlevania has been mooted before, with both Paul W.S. Anderson and James Wan ( Aquaman ) being attached at different points. The series certainly has plenty of rich lore for a potential movie to draw from, but the Netflix show proved it might be a franchise better suited to an animated adaptation instead of a live-action one.

While the Castlevania show is going strong, sadly the same can't be said of the video game franchise. Publisher Konami has shifted towards mobile gaming in recent years, resulting in flagship series like Metal Gear Solid , Silent Hill and Castlevania being left in a state of limbo. A new entry in the latter series hasn't been seen since 2014's Lords Of Shadow 2, and despite recent news of a multiplayer iOS game called Castlevania: Grimoire Of Souls coming to Japan, it appears the series is essentially on ice for the foreseeable future.
