　　小伙子J.C. Cullen绰号傻瓜，和孀居的母亲住在小城里。白天，他在一家汽车零件商店 工作，可只有在黄昏后，他的生活才算真正开始。他总去一家汽车修理厂的密室赌博。赌场和修理厂都是Carl Hooker开设的。此人将J.C. Cullen引进赌门，却又象父亲一样关心他。J.C. Cullen虽然嗜赌，本质上却很正派单纯，他在赌桌上常胜不单是靠运气更多是得力与他的头脑。Carl Hooker全年轻的门徒抓紧时间，到大赌城去，1957年，大赌城就是芝加哥。J.C. Cullen打点好行装抛下寡母跳上了去芝加哥的汽车……芝加哥高手如云，形形色色的人在这里过着不可思议的生活，他认识了迷人的脱衣舞星Lorry Dane，和她经营秘密赌场的丈夫George Cole。当J.C.
