　　格瓦斯（玛丽亚·雪儿 Maria Schell 饰）是一个非常平凡但又十分善良的女人，在惨遭情人的抛弃后，无依无靠的格瓦斯决定去当洗衣女工赚钱抚养自己的两个孩子。之后，格瓦斯再度走入了婚姻的殿堂，她的丈夫是一个老实又本分的工人。一场意外中，丈夫摔断了腿无法再去工作了，整个家庭的负担落到了格瓦斯的肩上，好在格瓦斯还有一点积蓄，她开了一家小杂货铺维持生计。
　　情人的再度出现搅乱了格瓦斯平静的生活，他不仅诱惑格瓦斯的丈夫走上了酗酒的道路，还赖在格瓦斯的家里白吃白喝，随着时间的推移，生活苦闷感情不顺的格瓦斯也染上了酗酒的毛病。
