　　在一个不知名的南美钻石矿区，独裁军队要关闭矿井，遭到了工人们的武装抵抗。法国矿工卡斯汀（查尔斯·文恩 Charles Vanel 饰）爱上了矿镇妓女锦（西蒙·西涅莱Simone Signoret 饰），在被控领导暴乱后决定带着锦和独生女儿玛丽娅（玛西娅·吉拉东 Michèle Girardon 饰）趁夜乘船离开。镇上的传教士利萨尔迪神父（米歇尔·皮寇利 Michel Piccoli 饰）为了保护卡斯汀而被镇上人误会，只好一同逃亡。在暴乱中炸毁军队指挥部的探险者查克（乔治·马沙尔 Georges Machal 饰）当夜也来到船上，并强迫大家中途弃船，徒步穿越热带雨林向巴西逃亡。一行五人在蚊虫肆虐的雨林里跋涉，饥饿难耐，不断迷路，有的出现幻觉，有的因绝望而发疯。他们究竟能否脱离险境，成功逃离呢？

　　本片是路易斯·布努艾尔流亡时期结束，重返欧洲影坛后与法国合拍的三部曲中的第二部。
