　 A film about the work of the artist most famous for her monuments such as the Vietnam Memorial Wall and the Civil Rights Fountain Memorial.

　 Documentary of the designing and creation of the Vietnam War Memorial. Focusing on the controversy that arose when it was announced that the winning design was submitted by a young Chinese-American woman. Since completion, The Vietnam War Memorial has become one of the most famous memorials in the US because of it's spiritual and emotional impact on viewers of the site. The documentary also describes other memorials Maya Lin has created, including the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery Alabama.

　 It was for good reason this film won the 1995 Academy Award for Best Documentary, as it displays, in abundance, the emotional human responses Maya Lin elicits with her architectural designs and sculpture. There was much controversy surrounding her Vietnam War Memorial, not the least of which focused on her Chinese-American origins. Writer/director Freida Lee Mock uses conventional methods (interviews, archival footage) to follow Lin's career in chronological order. It examines her work since winning the contest in which her student model was chosen for the infamous Washington war memorial. The stark emotion evoked by Lin's sensuous and kinetic creations promises to bring tears to your eyes. Unfortunately, we learn more about her work than about the artist, whose personality is oddly absent from this film. Mock only somewhat reveals the intense focus and powerful vision that drives Lin.

　 This Academy Award winner reveals the contentious origins of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and tells the inspiring story of its creator, a 21-year-old Yale architecture student. Beating out some of the most prestigious architecture firms from around the world, Lin's plan was selected from over 1,000 different designs, a giant victory for such a young and unknown artist. But little did Maya Lin know that her battle was just beginning. In Washington, to defend her design, Lin came up against a mighty opposition, challenging indignant veterans and a hostile Congress to ultimately prevail with her emotional "wall". And what began as one of the country's most bitterly disputed public monuments became one of the world's most inspirational and frequently visited memorials.

　 In this riveting and dramatic portrait, renowned filmmaker Freida Lee Mock combines interviews and archival footage to chronicle Lin's story-from it's origins, dominated by her David vs. Goliath battle over the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, to a career designing other memorials, always with an innate talent, and resolute courage.
