“美国偶像”的原型都是英国电视节目《流行偶像》（Pop Idol）。《美国偶像》是福克斯公司在《流行偶像》的基础上加以改编，于2002年推出的真人秀，目标为寻找美国流行音乐天王天后。参赛者首先在指定的城市参加初选，被评判和嘉宾（都是当时流行音乐界的大腕）选中的参赛者可到好莱坞参加下一轮比赛。然后在选出24名选手（12男12女）参加半决赛。半决赛时选手在电视上向全国观众演唱，有观众打电话投票，得票最低者被淘汰。前三周每周淘汰2男2女，其后每周淘汰一人，最后胜出者就是“美国偶像”，奖品是唱片公司的一纸合约。
