　　1980年12月8日，“披头士”乐队主唱约翰·列侬与妻子小野洋子在录音完毕后回到纽约曼哈顿中央公园的自家住宅门前，黑暗中突然蹿出一个人影，在大喊一声列侬名字后，此人掏出手枪对之连发六枪。在洋子的尖叫声中，列侬倒地不起，于送往医院的途中流血过多而身亡，影响整整几代人的摇滚超级偶像在全世界歌迷的扼腕痛哭中悄然陨落。后经调查，刺杀者名为马克·大卫·查普曼，二十五岁，是“披头士”乐队的死忠歌迷，具有双重人格及精神分裂倾向。
　　
　　本片就是以刺杀列侬事件为背景，将视角伸展到刺杀事件发生前·大卫·查普曼(乔纳斯·保尔饰)的真实生活中，从人性和个人经历角度来分析这一悲剧产生的必然性：查普曼与母亲(克里莎·费尔谢尔德饰)一直严重不合，曾多次恶言相向，直接导致他排斥外界的抵触情绪；查普曼与妻子格洛莉娅(米耶·奥莫里饰)也同样关系不佳，这样的状况使之深觉与身边人都毫无共同语言。感到整个世界都无法理解自己的查普曼，只有在读到J.D.塞林格的《麦田守望者》时，才能找到一点理解与共鸣。长期的自我封闭催发了个性的偏执，愤世嫉俗的查普曼开始厌恶一切“虚假的人与事”，以他的评判观，当时处于大众娱乐风口浪尖的披头士主唱约翰列侬，一个“腰缠万贯的嬉皮士”，成了他所既狂热崇拜又厌恶嫉妒和难以企及的集中代表。
　　
　　极端苦闷和不得志下，查普曼产生了做一件惊世骇俗的事而求得“名垂千古”的邪念，在选择牺牲对象时，他曾经自问：“杀一个默默无闻的人能有什么名望可言？”于是将可怕的目光对准了他极崇拜与仇恨于一体的偶像约翰·列侬，制造了一场惊世的悲剧……最终，大卫·查普曼被判处二十年徒刑，多年来一直在莱克斯岛服刑，查普曼虽然提出过几次假释请求，但全民的愤怒久久依然没有平息，这位渴望一举成名的小人物，将在永远得不到宽恕原谅中渡过悲惨的一生……
