　　保罗·柯蒂斯是个作曲家，他租借了一个英国妇女阿尔伍德太太森林房产中的一座小房子，同妻子海伦和两个女儿，十七岁的简和十岁的埃莉搬到了那里。性情孤僻的阿尔伍德太太使两个女孩子感到害怕，她们觉得房子的气氛阴森古怪，而且有时她们还会受到一种神秘外力的支配，从而不自觉地干出一些违背个人意志的事来。
　　在简差点被令人眩晕的光圈引诱着走进水中、而及时赶到的阿尔伍德太太救下她之后，阿尔伍德太太讲出了自己的秘密：她三十年前有个女儿卡伦，经三个朋友的介绍加入了一个秘密团体，在举行仪式时，雷电击中了教堂的塔尖，卡伦就此莫名其妙地失踪了。
　　不久，收到了信号的简代替了卡伦的位置，同三个朋友重新举行入会仪式。在仪式进行的时候，埃莉突然进入教堂，用一种非人的、仿佛来自另一世界生物的声音说道：卡伦被带走是一个误会。
　　在狂风和雷电之后，人们从恐慌中恢复过来，惊喜地发现：简毫发无损，而卡伦也重新回到了阿尔伍德太太的身边。
